Make-Up Workshop Ararat

The following article was written by Central Grampians LLEN’s workplace student, Sienna (16).

What was our school holiday make-up and wellbeing workshop?

Our make-up and wellbeing workshop consisted of approximately seven girls ranging in age from 12 – 17 and allowed learning and discussion in topics relating to their own wellbeing, diet, body image and how to hygienically apply makeup.

The girls started their workshop with a discussion ran by Deb Armstrong getting into topics such as stress and resilience and walked the girls through a wonderful, progressive, muscle-relaxation task which allows the girls to re-centre themselves and focus on positive self-care.

Bec Carmichael then talked to them about how social media distorts teen body image, including visual proof that helped aid the girls to understand that not everything you see online or in magazines is real and more likely than not the images that they produce have been edited to create this ideal image.

Stacey then talked the girls through a professional make-up demonstration which gave insight into how to look after your products and look after your skin whilst using makeup.

Make-up workshop

Why was this an important part of our holiday program?

We have found that make-up is an increasingly popular thing among teenage girls but it is important to understand that there are two sides to using makeup and that it can become a negative issue.

Make-up is fun and exciting, especially when going into high school, or when you steal your older sisters mascara, but there has always been the question as to why females “feel the need to use make-up products”.

It was very important for us to help guide the girls in thinking positively of themselves and making sure they are taking care of themselves physically and mentally at this age, as when young minds are so vulnerable during those vital years. Especially when dealing with other issues such as bullying, lack of self-confidence, distorted eating, eating disorders or any other mental illnesses.
