A Fresh Lick of Paint

Peddling along in the On Ya Bike! program.

Central Grampians LLEN visits students from Ararat North Primary School every week, to help them refurbish old bicycles so they can take home some sweet new rides.

The bicycles the students picked out at the start of the program were rusty, missing pieces, or not safe to ride. Together they took the bicycles apart, sanded them down as much as they could by hand, and found any missing pieces. For the past few weeks, students have been working on the designs for their bikes by deciding on base colours.

After helping the students decide on colours, Brendan, CGLLEN’s Youth Project Officer and On Ya Bike supervisor, took the bicycles down to Gason to have the bicycles professionally sandblasted and primed. The bikes were then taken back to the Central Grampians LLEN’s offices where they were painted according to the students’ wishes.

The students were stoked by the results. Seeing their bicycles come to life was very encouraging and empowering. The next phase will include more detailed decorations and reassembling the bicycles.
