‘Sandwich’ is a short film created by students from Ararat College, Marian College and Stawell Secondary College.  The students travelled to the Ballarat Learning Exchange (BLX) with LenZone! staff and teacher Sven O’Flynn with the task of ‘making a movie in a day’. 

Once there, they met their mentors for the day, David Brown and Jade Smithard; filmmakers from Mojo Productions. The students were asked to brainstorm ideas and storylines for the film.  They had to incorporate 3 items in the film, a sock, a sandwich and a clothes peg. 

The students got over the awkwardness of not knowing each other and decided the film would be a comedy.  With David and Jade’s guidance, they established what shots they would want to include such as panning shots, pan with zoom and stop motion animation.  A location was decided on and Sven was dobbed in as the main character. 

On location, the students were given the opportunity to work the lights, camera and sound equipment.  The crew worked well together and supported the very nervous actor who was making his film debut. 

It was a ‘wrap’ by about 5.00pm after a very full on day.  Then, it was back to the BLX to edit the work.  Using the latest editing software, Jade demonstrated how and why certain bits of footage had to be cut. 

Unfortunately, due to time constraints, we had to get the students back to Ararat before the film was ‘in the can’.  The feedback from the students was very positive and they all enjoyed the experience. 

We celebrated their achievements at a World Premier of the movie, which was part of the Vocational Pathways Awards held at Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre on 9^th September, 2008. 

The audience loved the movie and were very complimentary in their comments about the high quality of the movie and the performance.
