Careers Month 2005 Finale

Published Sep 25, 2005

Careers Month 2005 has come to an end for the Central Grampians LLEN at an official finale held at Ararat RSL on Wednesday 15th September. It was a celebration of local business and industry who, for the third year running, welcomed local secondary college students in their doors and behind the scenes.

Careers Month provides a wonderful opportunity for businesses to promote career pathways to local students

Careers Month 2005 ran from 15th August to 15th September, and saw over 600 students from Stawell Secondary College, Ararat Community College, Marian College and Lake Bolac College visit local industry and business, to gain a better insight into future career paths that are available to them locally.

Belinda Healy, Project Manager with the Central Grampians LLEN said “Active support from local business and industry is essential to the success of Careers Month, that and the assistance we receive from Schools is greatly appreciated and makes this project logistically possible”. That and the support from the Grampians Pyrenees Regional Development Board, who have been Careers Month project partners with the Central Grampians LLEN since day one.

Locally, there are many areas that a Young person could find employment – either within a traineeship or apprenticeship, or by gaining direct employment after leaving school. “For a lot of us locally, we are unaware of the positions and jobs available within our area, and this is the benefit for the students taking part in Careers Month”, said Belinda.

Students that took part in Careers Month will each receive a 36-page Careers Options booklet outlining local opportunities, from major employers within the Region. The booklets are then taken home for the family to read too.

Not only is Careers Month a successful program to identify job vacancies for Young people that want to stay in the Region, but also for those students who wish to go away to study at University. Careers Month provides University-bound students with an insight as to what is available within the Region, if they were to return to their hometowns with degree qualifications.

“Careers Month provides a wonderful opportunity for local businesses and industries to create a link with our Schools, where otherwise they may not get the opportunity” said Mr Wheaton, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Grampians LLEN.
