VET in Schools Coordinator, Sue Freeland, explains how finding the right career path may be the most important thing a young person will ever do.
Participating in a VET in Schools program is one exciting way of getting a jump-start on getting into a career path. VET programs provide training, knowledge, and ‘hands-on’ experience in specific industry areas for school students.
The Pyrenees-Grampians VET Cluster, made up of Ararat Community College, Marian College, Lake Bolac College, and Stawell Secondary College provides local students with access to over 20 VET programs provided within school timetables and externally.
Nick Thomas, a year 12 VCAL student at Stawell Secondary College is keen to be a Plumber.
Nick Thomas, a year 12 VCAL student at Stawell Secondary College is keen to be a Plumber. Nick has taken on VET Retail Operations and completes his on-the-job learning at J.B. Cameron's Pty. Ltd. a well-regarded plumbing supply business in Stawell. Nick works from 8.30am – 5.30pm each Wednesday and no doubt is dealing with most of the local plumbers and trades-people in the district. Nick completes the theory work of the Retail program during timetabled periods at school. Nick plans to complete his 200 hours of SWL by November this year and hopes to gain an apprenticeship in 2005 after completing his VCAL certificate.
If any of the programs listed below interests you, see your school VET coordinator and look into all the specific program details, then consider taking up a VET program in 2005.
