The Central Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network is calling on young people to apply to be on a new Youth Council.
Network Executive Officer, Mr David Wheaton, said the Central Grampians Regional Youth Council is being established to get local young people involved in community life.
“Young people often feel powerless to change things that concern them. We want to show them they can make a difference by giving them the chance to become active in making decisions and taking action around issues that affect them.” Mr Wheaton said.
The Youth Council will consist of 30 members aged 15 to 24 years drawn from within the local government boundaries of the Rural City of Ararat and the Northern Grampians Shire (excluding St. Arnaud).
Mr Wheaton said the Youth Council will determine its own agenda and activities and meet regularly to identify issues, make decisions and take action.
“We don’t want this to be another talk fest where nothing really changes. So we’ve attached $10,000 to the Youth Council so it has resources to act on the issues it identifies.” Mr Wheaton said.
Mr Wheaton said he believed there are many issues that affect young people that adults may not even consider. The Youth Council will be able to represent its peer group's concerns and work to find suitable solutions. In the process, Youth Council members will gain invaluable experience in dealing with a range of agencies and authorities, such as local government.
“We are delighted both Ararat Rural City Council and Northern Grampians Shire have
embraced the concept and agreed to recognise the Youth Council and support it in a variety of ways including providing meeting facilities and a dedicated liaison person who will also act as a mentor to the Council.” Mr Wheaton said.
Mr Wheaton said the concept of the Youth Council revolved around developing future
community leaders.
“By getting involved at a young age we hope members of the Youth Council will continue to be involved in the community throughout their lives.” Mr Wheaton said.
Applications for membership close on 8 August and prospective applicants can get the
application form from the Network website: www.cgllen.org.au, or by calling 5358 5766.
