LenZone! is open for business

Published Jun 2, 2006

In March LenZone! and the office of the Central Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network, located at 150 Main Street Stawell, were extensively vandalised.

Network chief executive, David Wheaton, said the extent of the vandalism was significant.

“More than 35 different items of office equipment were stolen or damaged and there was extensive damage to the building.”

“We had no choice but to close LenZone! until the building could be repainted, recarpeted and the damaged equipment replaced. The final cost of repairs has been about $40,000.” Mr Wheaton said.

Mr Wheaton said it had been a distressing time for everyone involved, especially because some exciting activities had been planned for Stawell’s youth during the first half of the year. “For example, last December 30 young people produced our first internet ‘podcast’ as part of our efforts to establish youth radio station, NumbFM.”

Mr Wheaton said that more than 100 young people had signed up to be involved with NumbFM and the extended closure of LenZone! had stalled this momentum. “We’re asked almost daily what’s happening and I can assure the youth of Stawell that it’s now business as usual for LenZone! and NumbFM will be powering ahead in the coming months.” Mr Wheaton said.

LenZone! Coordinator, Geoff Wake, said that while the vandalism was disheartening, his spirits had been lifted by the large number of young people who had offered their support and pitched in to help with the clean up.

“LenZone! has been refurbished, and looks great! We’re focusing on the future now and planning is underway for a huge celebration to put LenZone! back on the map.” Mr Wake said.

LenZone! is a youth resource centre operated by CGLLEN for young people aged 13-25. It is a safe, welcoming place where young people can get careers information and advice, surf the internet, find a quiet place to study, or just hang out.

LenZone! Stawell is open from 12.00pm to 5.00pm Tuesday to Friday
