Central Grampians LLEN
Dynamic drone duo, Nathaniel and Cale, alongside Central Grampians LLEN, are starting a new group for tech enthusiasts in Ararat called Grampians Drone Zone.
Nathaniel and Cale, aged 16 and 15 respectively, have not only been flying drones for a little while now, but they build them as well. A drone is essentially a piece of equipment that is lifted and propelled by a number of rotors. Their top flight speeds can range up to 120 – 160 kilometers per hour, and legally they can fly up to 400 feet high.
If you’re thinking they sound perfect for racing, you’d be correct. In fact, Nathaniel qualified for the Australian Drone Nationals 2017 to participate as a pilot in the racing competition. “It was an awesome experience” he told CGLLEN. He ranked 6th place in the nationals out of 64 pilots.
GRAMPIANS DRONE ZONE
Nathaniel and Cale are starting Grampians Drone Zone, alongside Central Grampians LLEN, to tackle the bad reputation drones have in the media. “We want to show that drones are good,” Nathaniel told CGLLEN. “They can be used recreationally as well,” as opposed to being used in the army.
As part of Drone Zone, participants will assemble drones, use simulators in training, learn how to fly and race drones, and potentially plan their very own race events and demonstrations in the community. These events may tie into CGLLEN’s FReeZa and Engage! programs.
Drone Zone is a free program and is open to young people aged 12-25. Experience or prior knowledge is not necessary to participate. Drone Zone will be meeting at Central Grampians LLEN offices (3/5 Laby Street, Ararat) once a fortnight on Thursdays at 3.30pm.
