In your mind’s eye, try to imagine a colour explosion; the sweet taste of pineapple rolling over your tongue; the sound of ripper tunes in ear; the scent of pizzas in the oven. Imagining those things might help you gain an insight into what Funky Friday Hawaiian Night on November 25 was like.
Kids aged 12-18 came along to the Stawell Powerhouse last week, and were welcomed with faux flaming torches, a giant lei, and hibiscus decorations to celebrate traditional Hawaiian culture. We also pulled out the pool table, fussball table, and even an air hockey table to keep the party going strong. All this, while some sweet tunes played through the speakers, created an amazing atmosphere for the young people who came along.
One of the games we played throughout the course of the night taught the kids some important geography skills as they tried to find Honolulu, Hawaii’s capital, on a map of the Hawaiian islands. The winner ‘hoola’d’ away with a great sense of pride.
Alongside all the fun, the kids also made their own Hawaiian pizzas, all topped with pineapples to balance some of those sweet and savoury flavours.
